Safety Tips for Halloween for Your Dogs

Posted: Oct 19, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

It’s important to include your pet in the holidays.  They are part of the family, so why should your dog miss out on all the fun?  Here are some safety tips for Halloween for your dog.

Should you take your dog trick or treating?  Most people, especially if they have children, love to celebrate Halloween.  But what about dogs?  What’s okay for them?

Safety first

If you decide to take your dog with you trick or treating, maintain control with a leash or harness.  Be ready in case your dog suddenly gets frightened or excited and tries to run away or charge at something or someone.  Your night of fun can turn into a tragedy if your dog injures someone, or gets hit by a vehicle.

Dogs react differently to people in Halloween costumes.  Some dogs see them, and hear the noises of toy guns and machines, and immediately get scared.  Others smell them and seem to disregard the unfamiliar sights and sounds.

Stay visible

Make sure cars and others can see your dog clearly.  Use dog safety lights, vests, or coats, a glowing collar around your dog’s neck, or sew or iron on reflective tape to his collar or costume.  You can attach a dog or runner safety light to his harness or collar.

]]>

When walking near traffic, make sure you, not your dog, is closer to the cars.  You are higher up off the ground, and larger than your dog, so you are more easily spotted by drivers.

Stay calm

At home, keep your dog away from all the activity.  If your dog is friendly, make sure she cannot run out the door when it gets opened for Trick or Treaters.   If he is the type that barks at visitors, it might be best to keep him in a separate room.  You’ll definitely want to do so if your dog has behavioral problems, such as jumping up on people, or any aggressive tendencies.

If your dog is outdoors, be sure she is away from Trick or Treaters.  You want to avoid any accidents or harm done, from your pet, or to your pet.  Also, you don’t want anyone to feed treats to your dog, either (see below).

Choose costumes carefully

Any costume you choose should not impair your pet’s ability to bark, see, hear, or move.  Do not force her to wear anything she doesn’t want to, no matter how cute you think she’ll be in it.

Most dogs will wear a bandanna, shirt, or dog jacket, even if they won’t wear a full costume.  So you can use one of those as an alternative, especially if the weather is cold.

NEVER feed you dog Halloween treats

Never feed your dog chocolate.  Chocolate contains a chemical that can be fatal to some dogs.  My sister’s dog died after she ate a bag of chocolate chips that were left on a kitchen counter.

Xylitol, a type of sugar, can also be poisonous or fatal.  To be safe, keep all treats away.

The foil, paper, or plastic wrappers that Halloween candy comes in can also pose a danger.  Ingesting these things can cause choking or intestinal blockages.

If you stay sensible and take some simple precautions, you and your pet can have a great time this holiday.  Use these safety tips for Halloween for your dog, and have a Happy Howl-o-ween!

When people are confronted with a flea infestation problem, the most logical and natural reaction would be is how to get rid of it immediately. Make an impact on those fleas with flea traps

Just about everybody can become the next target for a flea, well, as long as we are referring to warm-blooded creatures by the way. Fleas need to feed on blood not only to nourish themselves, but also as a means of sustenance so they can reproduce eggs. These creatures lay their eggs on the fur of our pets, in b

Choosing the Perfect Dog Halloween Costume

]]>

Taking your own efforts into consideration, you will want a costume that is simple to put on your dog. Simple hook and loop fasteners do simplify the process, but some costumes have too long a belly seam for male dogs. Considering this, tabs may be a better choice for your male dog.

It doesn’t matter if your dog weighs two pounds or two hundred, it is only important that your baby likes to get dressed. There are some dogs that you cannot persuade to dress and be cute. Others think it is just the thing to play dress up for the holiday.

If you have ever been to a Halloween costume party for dogs you have probably seen costumes of every variety. The traditional to the most unlikely, you will see them all at these events. Every dachshund owner has thought of dressing their pooch as a hot dog. It is cute, but predictible. Perhaps for something different you may decide to dress them up as hamburgers. Hamburger costumes are available and it will show how creative you are.

Perhaps that 160 pound mastiff can go as a ballerina. Now that would be an attention getter for sure. It all depends on the personality of your dog. If it is one that objects to having a collar placed around the neck, it probably won’t want to wear anything other than the collar when you take him out for a party.

Dogs do have feelings. Some like the revelry associated with dress-up parties and some do not. It depends on their tolerance. If they will let you put a hat or a pair of sunglasses on them, you may have reached the limit. Others will allow the dress, but will not let you touch the head. You know your dog best and should judge the outfit you select on what will allow the dog to be comfortable.

Small dogs are cute no matter what they are dressed as. A dog that is easy to dress will probably strut their stuff when they arrive at the party. Boots and shoes may not go well on your dog. If you have ever seen the awkward gait that a dog wearing boots has, you will understand. It appears they are attempting to step out of a mud puddle with each step. Perhaps you should to stop at the costume level.

If you plan on hosting a Halloween party for your dogs and his friends, you may want to put a theme to it. Selecting fairy tales is always a winner. The girls can come as Cinderella or Alice in Wonderland. The boys can come as Prince Charming or the mad hatter. Most of the other fairy tales have costumes available as well. From Little Red Riding Hood to Batman, someone has thought of it before you did.

A quick search on the internet will show all of the fairy tale or other costumes that are available today. Pay attention to your prices and your shipping costs. There are times when you can buy the costume at a local pet store and possibly pay a little more, but come out ahead, due to the shipping. If you have a particular costume that you must have though, it may not be available at the local pet store.
